Retinol Routineretinoid routine basics

Is it purging or irritation? How to tell with a new retinoid

Purging brings existing clogs to the surface faster in places you usually break out. Irritation brings redness, burning, peeling, or new breakouts in places you never break out. Location and sensation tell them apart.

What purging looks like

Retinoids speed up cell turnover, which can push developing microcomedones out sooner. That looks like a cluster of small pimples or whiteheads in your usual breakout zones, starting two to six weeks in and settling within a few more weeks. The key details: familiar locations, no significant pain, and skin that otherwise looks and feels okay.

What irritation looks like

Irritation is the skin objecting. Expect redness, stinging or burning on application, flaking or peeling, tightness, and breakouts in areas that are normally clear. It often starts within days of increasing frequency or strength. If your whole face feels raw, that is not purging working, that is a barrier asking for a break.

What to do for each

If it looks like purging, hold steady: keep the same product and frequency, keep the rest of the routine simple, and give it four to six weeks. If it looks like irritation, cut back to fewer nights per week, use a plain moisturizer, and skip other actives until calm returns. Stop and get advice for severe or persistent irritation, swelling, or anything that worries you.
